The lifespan and shell diameter depend directly on the snail’ type. This article is about the peculiarities of the snails, cultivated at the farm Snails House: Helix Aspersa Maxima, Helix Aspersa Muller and Helix Pomatia.
Big grey snail
Its other names are: Helix Aspersa Maxima or Gros Gris. This grey big snail was artificially bred and presented by breeders in 1978. At the time of presentation, representatives of this species bred only in summer and autumn-winter period, after 10 generations, breeders managed to ensure that the breeding period was in spring-summer.
Now Helix Aspersa Maxima is one of the most popular types for breeding. Ukrainian climate is particularly suitable to grow Gros Gris here. It takes 5-7 months for the grey snail to reach consumer criteria.
An adult snail weighs about 16-25 grams (there are exceptions of 30 g) and has a shell diameter of 40-45 mm. Thus, categorically, it belongs to one of the largest mollusks on the Earth.
Grey small snail
This subtype belongs to the big grey type. Its names are: Helix Aspersa Muller, Petit Gris. Moreover, this type is also called garden snail.
Adult snail Muller has a shell diameter from 25 to 40 mm and 35 mm of height. Its weight reaches from 6 to 10 gr. It reaches this size earlier than big grey snail. The latter takes it 5-6 months.
In nature, young snails live 1-2 years before they reach maturity. Life expectancy is short, because mollusks have many enemies, including rodents, birds and some insects, however, small Petit Gris is not able to defend itself from them.
In cooking, small gray snails are much appreciated due to their size. They are convenient to cook and eat. In addition, they have very tender and juicy meat.
Grape (burgundy) snail
Grape Snails are used to cook famous French delicacy — Escargot. Meat of this type is considered the most juicy and tasty. The species that grow in the province of Burgundy (hence the second name — Burgundy) are considered particularly tasty.
The climate of Ukraine allows growing them on open farms. Compared to Helix Aspersa, this type reaches maturity during one to three years. During this time they manage to grow a shell with a diameter of 40-45 mm and gain weight up to 35 grams.
In the wild, these species live for about 8 years. They also die often from predator attacks. At the same time, if the grape snail is safe, it can live up to 20 years. An indicated record of life for Helix Pomatia is 30 years.
Bonus: Interesting facts
Akhatina is the hugest terrestrial type of snail. They are edible, but are bought as pets. Diameter of shell can reach 30 cm.
Grape snails are the long-lovers. The rest types live less:
- Akhatins live 5 years (some exceptions may live up to 10 years);
- Apple snail lives 4 years;
- Phyza lives 14 months.
