Grape snail (Helix pomatia in Latin or escargot) is an herbivorous mollusk. It is not selective in food, so it can easily eat fresh greens, vegetables and fruits.
Grape snail’s organism structure
The digestive system of escargot is standard: mouth, located on the head under the first pair of tentacles. The oral cavity of Helix pomatia is very wide, consisting of salivary glands and about 25,000 teeth. The snails are deprived of the opportunity to chew, therefore, it tears off the pieces of food and grinds them.
In addition to cabbage, snails like eating grape leaves and wild strawberry leaves. Plantain, burdock and nettles, eats radish and horseradish are in the list of snails’ favorite food. Fresh fruits and vegetables can be included in the diet of mollusks:
Helix pomatia likes softened bread, hover, it served not very often. Maintaining the level of calcium is very significant, so mollusks eat the chalky soil. In the process of cultivation, it is possible to add calcium tablets, meat, fish or eggs into the diet of escargot.
Diet influences shell and meat of snails
Meat quality depends on the diet of the snail. Snails, fed with fruits and delicacies, have the tastiest meat.
The state of shell may help define whether the snail was given enough nutrients and vitamins. The shell of the snail that has optimal amount of vitamins, is firm with color varied from yellow-brown to brown-white (natural color of wood).
