History of snails Achatina

Achatina fulica is a giant representative of the gastropods of the land mollusks. This kind of snail is a real representative of an invasive species, that is, an invader of its habitat. The homeland of this giant remains the coastal strip of East Africa. However, over the past 200 years, the population and habitat have spread to huge areas, thanks to exceptionally rapid breeding: one individual is capable of giving about eight billion offspring over three years. Development of this type of snail is dangerous for all types of tropical cultures: cocoa, banana, tea and coconuts

Achatina snail

Climatically, these gastropods prefer high temperatures and abundant humidity, but over time, in search of new homes, they have mastered a variety of biotopes: agricultural fields, forest-steppe with rare thickets, lowlands, river valleys, thickets of shrubs. The optimum temperature for them is from +10 to +30 degrees Celsius. With a decrease in degree, it falls into hibernation.

They multiply 5-6 times a year. They are hermaphrodites, capable of self-fertilization, which is extremely rare, but still possible. The mollusk, that becomes larger in the period of fertilization, acts as a female, nurtures egg until its complete development, since this process is labor-consuming and energy-consuming. After all, one individual can contain up to 300 eggs. During the first year of life, young pets grow quite rapidly; a year-old mollusk is a thousand times larger than the size of a month-old baby.

Life expectancy also depends on threats from the external environment, because achatina has an enemy – predator, gonaksis, which controls the population size, destroying the rivals.

Use and damage

In Florida, USA a huge amount of crops, trees, even plasters on houses was destroyed for one year of reproduction of this species. Therefore, the importation of these snails is strictly forbidden, but the usefulness of these snails is also significant. They destroy not only crops and useful plants, but also decaying trees, plant remains, animal waste, sewage. In cosmetology, mucus achatina is used to create ointments for rapid healing, restoration, rejuvenation of the skin, fighting various skin diseases
